Built-in graphics like intel UHD/amd Vega cannot be used with a nvidia/amd dedicated graphic card to improve performance in games.

For nvida cards you need exactly same card to SLI (eg- two rtx 2080 cards), but brands difference doesn't matter(asus,msi...). And only RTX 2070 super and above cards support SLI (nvlink). You need to buy a nvlink bridge too.

In newer AMD cards like RX 5700/RX 5700xt doesn't support crossfire. Only older amd cards such as RX 580/RX 570/Vega 56 support crossfire, here you don't need the exact same card. But there are few compatibility issues.

Technologies like SLI (nvlink) & crossfire has slowly depleted because most games doesn't support it and in games that does performance scaling is not perfect in most cases. Therefore getting one powerfull graphic card is better for most gamers.

Dual gpus are useful only in really high end setup such as two RTX 2080Ti(s) and in some professional workloads.
